.........The Sovereign Nation of Shetland
.

.

.

The Declaration was first made in the centre of Lerwick, Shetland's main town, on 21st June 2010. Around 100 people attended to read out the Declaration below, which was handed out in leaflet form as well as being posted on a large 'Up Helly-Aa' style Bill. (Up Helly-Aa is the Shetland fire festival). Our first twenty members signed the declaration.

Declaration Of Redemption Of Sovereignty

Whereas:

Shetland was previously part of the Kingdom of Norway AND:

Norway, being joined with Denmark, was ruled by the Danish King Christian AND:

the sovereign people of Norway, Denmark, Shetland, Orkney, Faroe, Iceland and Greenland elected King Christian to be their monarch and so granted him his sovereignty AND:

the people of Shetland were a sovereign people, owning their land absolutely under God and making their own laws within the Norse system AND:

King Christian pawned his lands in the islands of Shetland to King James III of Scotland in 1469 as security in the matter of payment of a marriage dowry AND:

Kings of Scotland at various times, including 1549, 1550, 1558, 1560, 1585, 1589, 1660 and other intermediate years, evaded the rightful redemption of the King’s lands when the money was lawfully offered AND:

the only powers granted to King James III in Shetland were those of trustee of the King’s lands until they were redeemed, and of general administrator (but not sovereign) of Shetland as a whole AND:

part of his obligation was to preserve the existing language and laws AND:

the monarchs and governments of Scotland, Great Britain and The United Kingdom have for many years assumed powers over the sovereign people of these islands of Shetland to which they were not entitled and have usurped the rights and sovereignty of the sovereign people of Shetland AND:

those monarchs and governments have imposed a foreign system of laws in breach of their clear obligation to the contrary AND:

those laws have been used against the sovereign people of these islands to their great prejudice AND:

in 1530 King James the Fifth sent armed forces to impose his will, but those forces were defeated and slaughtered* AND:

nothing has occurred at any time to give the government of the United Kingdom any powers whatsoever over the sovereign people of Shetland AND:

the government of the United Kingdom has committed fraudulent acts upon the sovereign people of Shetland to their great detriment AND:

King Charles II declared in 1669 that in the event of a general dissolution of His Majesty’s properties, such as happened in 1707 with the Act of Union, these islands were not to be included AND:

Queen Anne ignored the provisions laid down by King Charles II and without any prior right, title or sovereignty, illegally incorporated Shetland into Great Britain with the 1707 Act of Union AND:

the 1707 Act of Union of England and Scotland makes no mention of Shetland AND:

in 1975 the government of the United Kingdom forced the sovereign people Shetland, to their great disadvantage, to remain in the European Economic Community, and later the European Union, against the clearly stated will of the people AND:

the government of the United Kingdom, without any prior right or title, appropriated the fishing and other rights, in the seas around these islands and gave them to foreign powers AND:

the government of the United Kingdom, without any prior right or title, appropriated the seabed around these islands for the purposes of oil extraction AND:

the government of the United Kingdom demands rents for the use of seabed around Shetland, to which they have no right or title AND:

the governments of Scotland and the United Kingdom, without right, demand taxes of the sovereign people of Shetland AND:

the Shetlands Islands Councillors and their legal department, having been advised of these issues and having chosen to take no action, thereby make themselves complicit in illegal acts AND:

the sovereign people of Shetland, as if in a drug-induced sleep, have been stripped of their rights and persuaded to believe that they are no longer sovereign, but are subject to a foreign and unlawful government AND:

in Scots law, sovereignty is defined as ownership of allodial title AND:

in Shetland, the only owners of the allodial title are the sovereign people.

Now:

In the face of this injustice, be it known by all men that:

We, the Sovereign People of Shetland do hereby redeem and declare our Sovereignty, which is our birthright.

We, the Sovereign People of Shetland, do declare the right to the ownership of Shetland, and the right to the unfettered control of Shetland destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible.

We, the Sovereign People of Shetland, declare that we owe no allegiance to any Scottish or United Kingdom government and are not bound by any of their statutes.

Further:

We hereby invite all residents of Shetland to declare their Sovereignty and join with us to set up a true and just administration, ensuring a society with rules by which its members wish to live.

We hereby invite all residents of Shetland to join their properties with that of The Sovereign Nation of Shetland under such new administration.

We hereby invite anyone from any country in the world, who supports these aims, namely to live in a free and just society, to become an honorary member of The Sovereign Nation of Shetland.

We hereby invite other countries to recognise The Sovereign Nation of Shetland as a political entity in its own right.

Long live the Sovereign Nation of Shetland.

One by one, we must each take responsibility for our lives and our world.

*Who has ever heard of the battle of Stennis? Few indeed. While most countries define and celebrate their history by the battles fought, this is an example of how the history of Shetland and Orkney has baeen suppressed. Hibbert writes: "In the year 1530, King JAMES V. was induced to make an hereditary grant of the estate of the Crown in Orkney and Shetland to his natural brother JAMES, Earl of Moray. When the islanders saw that a feudal superior was intended to be interposed between them and the sovereign, they were alarmed that the ancient laws of the country were about to suffer a corresponding change. Headed by Sir JAMES SINCLAIR, the Governor of Orkney, they arose in arms, to resist the arbitrary innovation. The Earl of Caithness, and his kinsman Lord SINCLAIR, were sent out against them: the udallers met their opponents on the confines of Stennis, and, in a sanguinary engagement, defeated them with great slaughter. The Earl of Caithness, and 400 of his followers, were slain; the rest were taken prisoners". This battle was in Orkney, but it involved both Orkney and Shetland udallers and is of fundamental importance to Shetland.
